Embracing Change: A Guide to Strategic Business Pivots

It’s easy to feel like you have to stick to a specific path or strategy in your business. You may feel pressure to adhere to certain expectations or to follow in the footsteps of successful entrepreneurs before you.
When you start to have uneasy feelings about your business, they can come from various sources. For example, the clear vision and strategy you started with may no longer be effective or fulfilling, or you may be experiencing burnout, overwhelm, or a sense of disconnection from your original vision. You may realize that your business is not turning out as you had hoped, and you’re not experiencing the feelings you had expected at this stage.
At first, the thought of pivoting can be scary.
Readjusting and reworking is a natural part of the entrepreneurial journey but one that isn’t done enough. It’s avoided by many– there’s a fear around changing– that our clients or our audience won’t continue to buy from us or trust us. We fear that we’ll be seen as incapable and unreliable. The truth is we evolve as human beings. Our outlook changes, our knowledge changes, our desires and the reality of our life changes. Why would we not want to express that and who we are in our business?
Forbes says that this pivot is part of the natural life cycle of any company and that even businesses that are considered successful will have to shift and change at some point.
When we embrace our evolution and allow our life and business to naturally dance together in a beautiful way, we no longer allow the two to be completely different. When we have this disconnection between life and business, our audience, followers and clients can feel it. They may not be able to pinpoint it, but they will sense that something is off.
This change starts with you… you are leading this dance. Look at your business today, taking stock of where you are, where you want to go and what changes need to be made to get there. Let’s realign your business to you. You get to decide what to offer, when to work, how to work, what you want to share, the events to host, and the collaborations you want to pursue.
You don’t have to feel stuck in a strategy or business model that isn’t working for you. And most importantly, you don’t have to feel ashamed or guilty for changing course or trying something new.
It’s common to feel like you’ve failed if your business isn’t meeting your expectations. But the truth is, the strength to make a change when something isn’t working out is powerful. The awareness that something isn’t aligned highlights just how good of a business owner you are. This is growth.
So if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just unsure of your next steps in your business, give yourself permission to pivot and change.
Remember, the beauty of entrepreneurship is that you get to create your own path and define success on your own terms. Embrace change, stay true to yourself, take risks and believe in your own abilities to create something truly extraordinary.
When you give yourself permission to pivot and change, you’re opening yourself up to new opportunities, experiences, and growth. You’re also giving yourself the freedom to create a business that truly aligns with your values and passions rather than one that feels forced or unauthentic.
Action Steps and prompts to strategically and emotionally create a pivot plan:
- Assess your current situation: Take a step back and evaluate your current business framework, products or services, automation, weekly routine, health of your team and overall brand messaging. Ask yourself: What’s working well? What’s not working? What are the gaps, and what could be optimized?
- Feel into your now: How does your business feel right now? How do you feel when you work in it? Does it feel different than it did before? Is this how you want to feel? How do you feel at the end of the week? How do you feel when it’s a new week?
- Identify your new direction: Now that you clearly understand your current situation, let’s look at the new possibilities! Ask yourself: What new products or services can I offer? What products or services should I no longer offer? What new branding or messaging can I create to align with my new direction? Who can I hire and delegate to? What automation would help me work better? What new target audience do I want to help?
- Feel into what you want: What tone do you want your business to have? What energy do you want it to give off? What do you genuinely want to offer and share? How do you want to help others? What does it feel like for you? For them, what’s their whole experience in working with you?
- Create a plan: You’re clear on your specifics; now we get to put it all together. Break down the steps you need to take to make the pivot, set realistic goals and timelines, get specific and identify any resources or support you may need along the way.
- Communicate: Begin to talk to your current clients and audience to let them know about your exciting changes and what they can start to see soon. Create excitement around this new adventure, and invite them to come along with you.
- Implement: Follow your plan. Remember that this plan is just a guidepost. It may change along the way, so it works better. You may find a gap or discover new ways to shift it so it aligns better. Adjust your approach as needed. Celebrate your wins along the way and stay focused on your long-term goals.
Pivoting doesn’t have to be a huge, drastic change, either. It can be a slight shift in your strategy or focus, or it can be a complete overhaul of your business model. The key is to stay open to new possibilities and trust your instincts and abilities.
Even when it makes sense– change is still hard. Entrepreneur.com says that there are three main things that help individuals take the leap of making changes: support, accountability and coaching.
